Wege Prize 2023 Phase 2 Teams SELECTED

We are pleased to announce that Phase 1 of Wege Prize 2023 is now complete and 32 teams are moving on to Phase 2! These teams of students from around the world represent 23 countries (by citizenship), 72 academic institutions, and 102 academic disciplines.

WHAT ARE THEY WORKING ON?

These talented students have identified a variety of local, national, and international wicked problems and have begun to present viable solutions that they will refine over the course of the competition and beyond. Some of the ideas we've reviewed so far include:

  • Developing a sustainable and circular leather alternative using crop waste.

  • Growing mycelium for the use of biodegradable packaging products.

  • Developing eco-friendly bricks to engage more circular construction and manufacturing processes.

  • Transforming sewer sludge into electricity, heat, and biofertilizer to help restore aquatic ecosystems.

  • ...and much more!

WHAT'S NEXT?

From now until early January, these teams will utilize the Preliminary Judges' feedback from Phase 1 to develop the beginning of their Project Summary, an informative and visually compelling document including further explanation of their solution, an impact assessment, and real-world prototyping. Their Phase 2 submissions will be reviewed by the Core Judges who will determine the semifinalist teams in mid-January. Stay tuned!
